Détail des sessions
Session: #88 : Reconstructing the history of fire, control and application of thermal energy and its technical, social, symbolic and environmental consequences
The reconstruction of the history of the control and application of thermal energy to the transformation of matter opens a window on the relationship between this cultural resource and their relation with the modes of production and social reproduction in the history of humanity from societies from hunter gatherers to state societies. This session will deal with this relationship between man and fire from archaeological examples of different human societies from the past including different societies, continents and paleoenvironments and their relationship with our current global situation.
Our session will be dedicated to the discussion, enrichment and development of this theme through the presentation of different problematics and results from the archaeological context. Contributions will be presented in the form of communications and going to be part of a future collective publication related to research that have highlighted, through the analysis of archaeological data, the social impact of thermal energy control.
Communications may relate to many rich and different topics, such as the use of fire, the different material productions related to the use of thermal energy and their relationship with the different modes of production, social organization and social reproduction including activities related to the symbolic or super structural world which manifest the influence of the use and control of thermal energy and its consequences in the different domains mentioned in the title of our session. The presentations could be be related to technical, productive, social, symbolic and environmental point of view, and related to our current situation in relation to control, use of thermal energy and it’s role with our socials systems. If our session can attract colleagues from other disciplines, I would be open to them.

Session # 235 : The archaeology of food processing : innovative approaches from case studies around the world
Studying food and foodways can tell us a multitude of things about daily life, social structure, access to resources, but also ideology. While determining the individual ingredients used in past foods has become increasingly more systematic, apprehending the steps in the processing of
ingredients (plant- and animal-based), for example in food and drink preparations, or for conservation, is a more complex task that requires a set of specialized tools and techniques, often used in combination. The way food is cooked can be an important testimony of cultural specificities
that can change depending on the time, the geographical location, and the social context. However, studies on the subject are relatively few in number compared to studies that solely present the species consumed. In this session, entitled “Archaeology of food processing: innovative approaches
from case studies around the world”, we seek to bring together scholars working in different parts of the world and on different time periods to present their recent advances on the topic of food processing and how they are approaching this topic in light of their unique contexts and set of
questions. We encourage presentations that include a range of specializations (e.g., archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, ceramic analysis, residue studies, use-wear analysis, experimental studies, ethnographic and ethnohistorical studies, etc.), among others.
